Rwanda Safari and Gorilla Trekking FAQs 2026 and 2027

Gorilla trekking is a guided hike in Volcanoes National Park that ends with one hour beside a habituated mountain gorilla family. Rangers and trackers lead every group, and groups are limited to 8 visitors. All gorilla trekking in Rwanda takes place in Volcanoes National Park, near the town of Musanze in northern Rwanda. The park is 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Kigali, depending on traffic. Guests who stay at a lodge near the park are collected at about 6:30 am, while the 1-day trek from Kigali leaves at 4:30 am. See our Volcanoes National Park page.

The trek takes 2 to 8 hours from trailhead to trailhead, including the hike up, one hour with the gorillas and the hike back. The average is 4 to 5 hours. The drive from the park office to the trailhead is extra and takes 25 minutes to almost 2 hours. Most guests are back at their lodge between about 1:00 and 3:30 pm.

Each gorilla family is visited by one group of up to 8 people a day. The park has 24 gorilla families, and 12 habituated families are open to visitors every day, so it issues 96 permits a day. Each group spends exactly one hour with its family. These small numbers protect the gorillas, and they are why dates in June to September and December to February sell out first. Ten percent of tourism revenues goes back to local communities.

The minimum age is 15 for gorilla trekking and for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe. Golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park has a minimum age of 12. It depends on the day. No gorilla family is permanently easy or hard, because the length depends on where the gorillas slept and moved. The trek starts at 2,300 to 2,600 meters above sea level, with steep slopes and mud. Your guide sends the park a form with your age, health and requests the evening before, but nothing is guaranteed. Yes, with planning. Porters help on steep, muddy trails. A team of eight porters can carry you on a stretcher to the gorillas and back for US$200 per guest, arranged in advance. A portable seat can be arranged with the porters for the hour with the gorillas. Tell us your health status beforehand, and we ask the park office to arrange a doctor if you may need one.

Gorillas are wild, so there is no official guarantee, and there is no official research on sighting rates. On the ground, our experience is that the chance of seeing the gorillas is close to certain, because trackers locate the families before guests set out. What changes from day to day is how long and how steep the hike is, so we cannot promise an easy or a hard trek.

Rangers and trackers lead every trek, and the gorillas are habituated to calm human presence. Groups are limited to 8, you keep at least 7 meters away, and if a gorilla walks toward you, you stay still. The permit costs US$1,500 per person for international visitors in 2026 and 2027, set by the Rwanda Development Board. From November to May it is US$1,050 with at least 2 nights in Akagera or Nyungwe. Also from November to May, foreign residents and other African citizens pay US$500, and East African Community citizens and Rwandans pay US$200. From June to October all of them pay US$1,500. Yes. The Rwanda Development Board sets the price, so it is the same at every licensed operator and for every age. A licensed operator books the permit for you and plans your dates around it. If another quote shows a lower total, compare what it includes, especially the lodge category, before assuming the permit is the difference. Our guide explains how to book a Rwanda gorilla permit.

Book 3 to 6 months ahead, and earlier for June to September and December to February, which sell out first because only 96 permits are issued each day. We book permits early and watch for cancellations, so we can sometimes find last-minute slots, but it is never guaranteed. On some days the park is completely full.

Permits are non-refundable once purchased, but you can reschedule. Changing the date costs 20% of the permit fee, and the request must reach us at least 7 days before the trek date. The park advises you not to trek if you feel unwell, though nobody is tested and the decision is yours. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers illness. Yes. The 1-day gorilla trek leaves Kigali at 4:30 am, takes about 2.5 hours by road each way, and usually returns around 6 to 7 pm. It costs from US$1,950 per person sharing, with the permit included. It suits guests with limited time, such as a conference visit. Rwanda charges US$1,500 for a permit and Uganda US$800 for a foreign non-resident. Rwanda offers a shorter transfer from Kigali, a smooth system and luxury lodges near the park. Most Rwanda safaris last 3 to 7 days, and longer trips are planned on request. A 3 to 4 day trip focuses on Volcanoes National Park. A 5 to 7 day trip usually adds a second park, Nyungwe for chimpanzees or Akagera for the Big Five. Trips of more than 7 days can cover all three parks. The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, bring the firmest trails and the busiest permit dates. March to May and October to November are wetter, with muddier trails and fewer visitors. Gorilla trekking runs all year. Volcanoes National Park also has golden monkeys, which cost US$100 to track. Nyungwe National Park offers chimpanzee trekking at US$250 for the day including park entry, and a canopy walk at US$140 for the day. Akagera National Park offers game drives and boat trips and is the Big Five park in Rwanda. These are park prices for international visitors in 2026.

Kigali is 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Volcanoes National Park, 2.5 hours from Akagera and 7 hours from Nyungwe. Volcanoes to Nyungwe is 5 hours. Lake Kivu at Karongi is about 3 hours from Volcanoes and about 2 hours from Nyungwe. This is why 3 to 4 day trips stay in Volcanoes, and longer trips add one or two parks to the route.

Yes. Your vehicle, guide and rooms are for your party only, because we do not mix clients. Rooms are shared in pairs, so a traveler without a roommate pays a single room supplement, quoted trip by trip. Most visitors can get a visa on arrival, and you can also apply online before you travel. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$50. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie countries receive a free 30-day visa. The East Africa Tourist Visa costs US$100 for 90 days across Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. Each traveler is responsible for their own visa, so check the current rules on the Rwanda immigration website before you travel.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever transmission risk, including after more than 12 hours in transit there. Malaria risk exists in Rwanda, so ask a travel clinic about prevention. We do not give medical advice, so check current requirements with a travel clinic before you travel, and carry your original certificate if you need one.

In my experience Rwanda is very safe, and many visitors and media reports describe it as one of the safest countries in Africa and the world. Wear hiking boots, a long-sleeve shirt, long trousers, gaiters, a rain jacket, garden gloves, a sun hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Long clothing protects you from stinging nettles, insects and mud. Walking sticks are handed out at the trailhead. Water comes in reusable bottles and your lodge provides a packed lunch. Yes, we recommend it. Porters are local community members who help on steep, muddy trails, especially in the rain. Their wage is about US$10 a day, and guests usually add US$10 to US$20 as a tip, although tipping is optional. If you cannot hike, a team of eight porters can carry you on a stretcher for US$200 per guest, which we arrange in advance with your guide.

Tipping is never required in Rwanda. It is appreciated, and it is always up to you. Most guests give the park guide US$30 or more, and some give US$50 or US$100. The trackers who find the gorilla family are thanked as a group, usually US$10 to US$20 each across a team of three or four. Porters are covered in the previous answer.

Rwanda uses 230 volt electricity at 50 hertz, with plug types C and J. Bring an adapter if your devices use a different plug. Most modern phone and camera chargers accept 100 to 240 volts, but check the label on each charger, especially for older equipment such as hair dryers and shavers.
