Gorilla Trekking Rwanda: Quick Answer
A guided trek through the rainforest of Volcanoes National Park to spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. Treks last between 30 minutes and several hours depending on where the gorillas are found that morning, and every group is led by Rwanda Development Board rangers and trackers.
Rwanda is the most accessible place in the world to see mountain gorillas — Volcanoes National Park sits roughly 2.5 hours from Kigali International Airport, shorter than the transfer for most other gorilla trekking destinations in East Africa.
Based on our experience organizing gorilla treks for international travelers since 2020, we recommend booking your permit at least 3–6 months ahead of a June–September or December–February departure.

Many travelers close the trip with a night or two at Lake Kivu.
Luxury and Midrange, Side by Side
Hope Tours Africa is luxury-led and midrange-capable — the same permit and park access supports both traveler profiles. Our luxury Rwanda safari itineraries pair gorilla trekking with premium lodges, while the shorter itineraries above suit travelers prioritizing efficiency over lodge category.
Why Gorilla Trekking Rwanda Is Unique
Easy access from Kigali
Volcanoes National Park is about 2.5 hours from the capital, making even a one-day gorilla trek realistic — something few other gorilla trekking destinations can offer.
Highly organized trekking system
RDB rangers and trackers locate all 12 habituated gorilla families every morning before visitors arrive, so sightings are close to guaranteed and the experience runs on a predictable schedule.
Strong lodge infrastructure
The area around Volcanoes National Park has some of the best safari lodges in East Africa, which is why gorilla trekking works equally well for midrange travelers and those seeking an ultra-luxury experience.
Who Gorilla Trekking Rwanda Is Best For
A gorilla trekking day typically runs 2–8 hours door to door, depending on where trackers locate the assigned gorilla family that morning.

EXCELLENT Based on 39 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Benjamin VVerified Great Experience Despite Limited Big Five Sightings I’m satisfied with the overall experience, even though we only saw 2 out of the Big Five. It was still a one-of-a-kind experience for me. Eric was very supportive from inquiry to booking, smooth and hassle-free. Germain, our guide, went the extra mile to track animals, especially the Big Five. Unfortunately, we only spotted two, but that’s part of the real safari experience, you can’t force wildlife to appear. Overall, still highly recommended.Posted on Tripadvisor Van NVerified Some adventures bring great joy As one of the first Vietnamese travellers to choose this tour, and also the only guest on that day, I was genuinely beyond my expectations with the experience. It was not only memorable, but also deeply impressive in a way that is difficult to put fully into words. First, the length of the tour is extremely suitable for travellers who do not have much time to stay in Rwanda. Second, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. The landscape is filled with stunning terraced potato fields, freely grazing cows and sheep, and hardworking local farmers still carrying baskets, digging the soil, planting potatoes, and harvesting crops entirely by hand, without the presence of any machinery. The journey also takes you through unspoiled forest, where golden monkeys, birds, flowers, waterfalls, and streams create a truly magical natural setting. The weather was wonderfully cool, at around 20 degrees Celsius, with gentle sunshine and a refreshing breeze. The hike itself can be quite demanding, especially outside the dry season, but once you reach the summit, the reward is so extraordinary that all you can say is, “Wow.” Third, I was especially touched by the helpfulness and dedication of the operator, the tour guide, and the porter. Finally, it is amazing food. One piece of advice: do not forget to order the potatoes, because the potatoes from this region truly deserve their reputation and are simply unforgettable. Overall, this tour gave me far more than I had expected.Posted on Tripadvisor Christopher DVerified Unbelievable Experience! My experience with Hope Tours was superb. Eric was very responsive and helped organise everything smoothly from the moment I sent the first WhatsApp to him. The trek itself is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and well worth the expense. I’m very grateful to Eric for making the whole day so memorable. It was enjoyable even having lunch together after the trek was done and getting to know each other in the car ride back to Kigali. If you are looking to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda, I cannot recommend Hope Tours enough!Posted on Tripadvisor Irene SVerified Highlights of Rwanda - not to be missed! We did a six day tour covering a chimpanzee hike in Nyungwe National Park, a golden monkey hike in Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu and Kigali. Eric was an excellent and flexible guide who supported us to do additional activities in the parks and whose knowledge about his country was exceptional. At each venue we were able to view the animals and sights we hoped to see with time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. This was an easy trip to book with excellent communication from Eric at all stages. Would highly recommend Hope Tours for any Rwandan trip.Posted on Tripadvisor S WVerified We love Rwanda. We saw the key spots and he was courteos. We did a city tour of Kigali including the genocide memorial and went to volcanoes national park for 3 nights for gorilla and golden monkey trekking. Eric was friendly and professional. He provided a lot of information about the country which was helped us get to know Rwanda better. He was well-organized and was always on time and kept us informed of the plans each day. The car was always clean and everyday he filled our water bottles with drinking water. In Kinigi he took us to the Dian Fossey center and a shop that sold some really nice work of local artists, he also suggested other activities including Gorilla Guardian Village but we didn’t have time to visit on this trip. We ran out of cash towards the end of the trip and he helped us made arrangements so we could pay/tip our guides and porters, which we really appreciated. Gorilla Trekking Rwanda Tours FAQs
How much does a Gorilla Trekking Rwanda safari cost?
A complete gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda typically costs $1,950–$7,500 per person, depending on trip length and lodge category. Every price includes the mandatory $1,500 gorilla permit, transport, accommodation, park fees, and guiding. Extended luxury itineraries with premium lodges can exceed $10,000 per person.
How many days do I need for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Most travelers plan 3–4 days: one day to arrive and transfer to Volcanoes National Park, the trekking day itself, and a relaxed return to Kigali. A 1-day trip from Kigali is possible but requires a very early departure and leaves no buffer for delays.
Are Hope Tours Africa’s gorilla treks private?
Yes. Your vehicle, guide, and lodge stays are entirely private. The gorilla trek itself is done in small groups of up to 8 people per habituated family, a rule set by the Rwanda Development Board to protect the gorillas — this applies to every operator, not just Hope Tours Africa.
Can I combine gorilla trekking with other Rwanda experiences?
Yes. Many travelers add chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest, a Big Five safari in Akagera National Park, or time at Lake Kivu, building a 5–7 day multi-park Rwanda itinerary around the gorilla trek.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking 3–6 months ahead of your preferred dates. Only 96 permits are issued per day across all 12 habituated families, and June–September and December–February sell out first.
Is gorilla trekking in Rwanda safe?
Yes. Every trek is led by trained RDB rangers and trackers, gorilla families are habituated and monitored daily, and armed escorts accompany trekking groups as a standard precaution.
