Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

Wake up early for a hearty breakfast before heading to the Volcanoes National Park Rwanda headquarters at Kinigi. Here, park rangers will brief you on trekking etiquette and assign you to a specific gorilla family. Then, the magic happens.

Led by experienced trackers, you will hike into the dense forest. The trek can range from 2hrs-8hrs depending on the gorillas' movement. The anticipation builds with every snapped twig and rustling leaf. Suddenly, you will find them. Spending one hour observing these gentle giants watching mothers groom their infants while the Silverback watches over them is an emotional, spiritual experience that words rarely do justice.

In the afternoon, after relaxing and sharing stories of your trek, we visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. Here, former poachers who have turned into conservationists will showcase the rich history of Rwanda through traditional Intore dancing, drumming, and a tour of a replica King’s palace. It is a vibrant celebration of life and redemption.

Golden Monkey Trekking & Return to Kigali for Departure Flight

On your final morning, you return to the forest, but this time for a different kind of primate encounter. Golden Monkey trekking is lively, fast-paced, and incredibly fun. These striking orange-gold monkeys inhabit the bamboo zones near the base of the volcanoes.

Unlike the calm gorillas, golden monkeys are constantly active, leaping acrobatically from branch to branch and playing in the bamboo. It offers fantastic photography opportunities and a lighter, joyous end to your Trekking Safaris experience.

After the trek, we drive back to the lodge for a hot lunch and check-out. We then embark on the scenic drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, we can drop you off at the airport or your hotel, marking the end of a truly unforgettable 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time for a Rwanda Gorilla Tour?

You can trek gorillas year-round, but the best time is during the dry seasons: mid-December to early February and June to September. During these months, the trails in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda are less muddy and easier to navigate. However, the wet season offers lush photography conditions and often shorter treks as gorillas move to lower altitudes.

How difficult is the Gorilla Trek?

The difficulty varies depending on which gorilla family you are assigned to track. Some groups are close to the park edge (a 1hour walk), while others require a hike of 2 to 4 hours. We recommend a moderate level of fitness. If you have mobility concerns, let us know in advance so we can request an easier trek or arrange for a stretcher service.

Can I combine gorilla trekking with other safaris in Rwanda?

Absolutely. Many travelers combine this tour with Akagera National Park for wildlife safaris or Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee trekking and canopy walks. Hope Tours Africa can tailor an extended itinerary to match your interests.

How close do we get to the gorillas on a trek?

Visitors spend one full hour with the gorilla family from a distance of about 7 meters, though the gorillas may move closer on their own. Rangers ensure a safe and respectful experience for both visitors and the gorillas.

How safe is it to travel to Volcanoes National Park Rwanda?

Rwanda is ranked as one of the safest countries in Africa. The security in and around Volcanoes National Park is excellent. Tourism is a vital part of the economy, and the government prioritizes the safety of visitors. You will be accompanied by armed rangers during the trek for protection against wild animals like buffaloes.

Is there an age limit for gorilla trekking?

Yes, the strict minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years old. This rule is enforced by the park authorities to prevent the transmission of childhood diseases to the primates. There is no upper age limit, provided you are fit enough to hike.
